Pushing the Boundaries of Aerial Engineering Inspections:SKYLD UAV Operations at 1,800m for Hydro Dolomiti Energia (HDE) under the SUNRISE EU Project

SKYLD UAV Operations at 1,800m for Hydro Dolomiti Energia (HDE) under the SUNRISE EU Project

SKYLD is proud to share its latest field deployment in support of Hydro Dolomiti Energia (HDE) in Trento, Italy. Conducted under the EU-funded SUNRISE project (sunrise-europe.eu), this mission involved advanced UAV-enabled engineering inspections in remote and mountainous terrain—demonstrating SKYLD’s commitment to innovation in critical infrastructure (CI) protection.

Operating at 1,800 meters altitude in harsh alpine conditions, SKYLD’s UAVs accessed areas inaccessible by ground teams. The mission was executed Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), leveraging satellite communications (SATCOM) to overcome dense forest cover and signal obstructions, while maintaining seamless, secure, high-bandwidth video streaming for real-time situational awareness.

Key Highlights:

  • Edge Computing: All video analysis and inspection assessments were processed onboard the UAV in real-time, eliminating reliance on ground infrastructure.
  • Autonomous Navigation: Reliable operation in GNSS-/4G-challenged environments, enabled by SATCOM-based command and control.
  • Live Video Inspection: Data was streamed directly to the custom SKYLD UI, purpose-built for Critical Infrastructure Operators.
  • SUNRISE EU Project Contribution: This mission directly supports the SUNRISE goal of improving situational awareness in non-permissive environments.

This operation highlights SKYLD’s ability to combine next-generation UAV platforms, AI-powered analytics, and mission-ready interfaces to provide actionable insights for CI operators. It further underscores our role in enabling precision inspection and real-time decision support in remote, rugged, and communication-degraded scenarios.
